Biography

Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Yayoi Kusama is an artist whose work is intimately linked to her struggle with hallucinations and mental disorders. In 1977, she voluntarily committed herself to a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo, where she still resides.

Her art, centered on obsessive motifs such as polka dots and infinite networks, reflects her quest to master these visions.
Using immersive installations, she seeks to transform her personal anxieties into a universal experience of contemplation and transcendence.
This way, Kusama explores the boundaries between the individual and the infinite, offering a space where the mind can dissolve into a larger whole.

Approach

Yayoi Kusama's artistic approach is deeply rooted in her personal experience of mental disorders, which she transforms into a unique visual language.

She uses obsessive motifs, such as polka dots and infinite networks, to create immersive works that explore infinity, repetition and the dissolution of the self.

Kusama seeks to materialize inner visions of parallel worlds, while questioning the boundary between the individual and the universe, inside and outside. Her art is an ongoing quest for transcendence and self-forgetting.
