Self-taught, Valérie Brulev lives and works in La Rochelle, France, where she works mainly with charcoal, for its capacity for black and more than anything else, for the idea that man has been using it since the dawn of time, since fire was fire. Attached to the world of psychonauts, with the only addictive substance being her encounter with the other and a meditative force leading quietly to the calm of "doing", Valerie exploits chance while respecting the restriction of the abstraction of a form.

Contrast is her alphabet: black/white, light/shadow, strength/fragility, full/empty, living/inert, transparent/opaque etc.

Disorientation is often present in her drawings. Her world is a gestation or slow unfolding, the life of an unfulfilled desire; autonomous and singular, an attempt at a dreamed response to reality.
