Hamish McKay Gallery opened in 1993. The gallerist's vision has always been to show contemporary artists making visually exciting works, also conceptually dynamic and culturally relevant, thus advancing the art conversation here and internationally.

Initially the gallery focused on New Zealand artists, but in the early 2000s Hamish pioneered the exhibition of revolutionary Australian artists in New Zealand. This expanded focus stimulated dialogue and exchange between artists from across Tasmania; and caught the attention of collectors and institutions in both countries.

Hamish McKay Gallery has helped make viewing and thinking about contemporary art surprising and fun throughout Aotearoa.
