The Ambrosian Library of Milan is an important cultural and historical institution founded on 8 December 1609 by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, himself an influential figure in the Catholic Church and a great patron of the arts and culture. The library takes its name from the patron saint of Milan, Ambrose of Milan.
The Ambrosian Library houses a vast collection of manuscripts, incunabula (books printed before 1501), old books, drawings, engravings and paintings. It is reputed to be one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and possesses unique cultural and artistic treasures.
In addition to its precious collections, the library is also famous for its magnificent public reading room, the Sala Fredericiana, which has been open to the public since its foundation. This room is located in the same building as the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, which exhibits prestigious works of art.
Milan's Ambrosian Library is a must for researchers, art historians and cultural enthusiasts, who can discover treasures from the past and immerse themselves in the rich history of Italy and Europe.
