The Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation is one of the most significant international art collections, boasting over 13,000 works.
Inaugurated on July 28, 1964, by André Malraux, the foundation emerged from the friendship between Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite, with some of the most important 20th-century artists such as Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall, and others.
As visionary figures, prominent art dealers, publishers, and printers in the immediate post-war period, Aimé and Marguerite organized legendary exhibitions in their Parisian gallery, including the First International Exhibition of Surrealism in 1947 curated by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp.
During a trip to the United States in the 1950s, they discovered the Barnes, Philips, and Solomon R. Guggenheim collections, inspiring them to establish the first private art foundation in France.
