Fontaine Saint Jean

The Saint-Jean fountain, located on the Place Saint-Jean in Lyon, is a remarkable work of 19th-century architecture designed by René Dardel in 1844. This neo-Renaissance fountain features a bronze sculpture by Jean-Marie Bonnassieux depicting the baptism of Christ by Saint John the Baptist.

Place Saint-Jean, where the fountain is located, is one of Lyon's oldest squares, dominated by the majestic Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral. The monument, which is both historic and artistic, has recently been restored, after the statue was incorrectly repositioned in 1983 with its back to the cathedral. The statue was returned to its correct orientation in 2023, restoring its harmony with the religious and historical environment of the square.
