Thiès - Senegal

Senegal
This musical instrument accompanies the Oluk dances of the Opaluk and Olomata of the older age groups. Made from the fruit of the bramble tree, it has a bramble leaf string and an aluminium ring. Working like a castanet, the player places the ring around his thumb and strikes the ring against the fruit held in his palm, producing a distinct sound that sets the rhythm for the dance.
