Milan - Italy
Italy
Undoubtedly one of Milan's most traditional restaurants (the nonna is the chef), the decor is as rustic as an old canteen. On the menu are Milanese specialities (ossobuco, cassöela, chops...) that have not been revisited since 1962.
Since 1962, Mrs Elide, the historic owner, has ensured that everything in the kitchen is done according to the dogmas of Lombardy and Milanese tradition. A reminder of old Milan in the heart of Brera, a place where time seems to have stood still. The walls tell the story of a Milan gone by, a city where artists, politicians, writers, journalists and musicians used to gather at the Matarel to tell stories, discuss politics, sing Milanese songs, eat a hearty hot meal and drink good wine.
One of the most famous customers was Benedetto Craxi, known as Bettino, who wrote the pages of Italian political history of those years among the paintings at the Matarel.
