Nantes - France
France
A must-see in Nantes! Not to be missed, the Passage Pommeraye takes you on a journey out of time.
This passage, inaugurated in 1843, owes its name to a young notary, Louis Pommeraye, who dreamed of transforming an unhealthy and ill-famed neighbourhood worthy of Les Misérables, into a luxurious shopping passage worthy of its very fashionable Parisian models. The Passage quickly became a popular place to stroll in Nantes.
The style of the Passage Pommeraye is astonishing for its exuberant decoration, a mixture of neo-classicism and Louis-Philippe eclecticism. It is impossible to list here all the ornamentation of the Passage, which is abundant to the point of excess. Its glass roof, its torchères, its columns, its oeil-de-bœuf, its monumental staircase, its hidden motifs... Everything here contributes to making the Passage Pommeraye perhaps the most beautiful covered passage in Europe, through the profusion and grace of its architectural and decorative details. One simple word can sum it up: magic.
