Victoria Bridge Abutment and Memorial
Description

The original wooden bridge was built in 1864 and replaced several times over the coming decades. When the last bridge was built around 1970, the southern arch that houses the Vasyli memorial was under threat, but local people had such respect for the boy's memory that this piece of the original bridge was saved, and although Mayo's original medallion was lost, a replacement was created from old photographs.

Overhanging to one side, the arch now pays a notable tribute to Vasyli, and since the late 1980s the Greek community has placed a wreath under the plaque every year on Anzac Day. The abutment of the Victoria Bridge was designated a heritage site in 1992 and a dedicated access bridge was built in 2015.
